Behind every image, there’s a precise process — a mix of coordination, timing, and technical decisions made in some of the most challenging conditions on Earth.
Capturing the aurora over the ice isn’t about luck; it’s about preparation and teamwork. From the bridge to the camera deck, every move is calculated to give the lights their best stage.
We work hand in hand with the bridge team, searching for newly formed ice thick enough to hold the ship in position. Finding the right patch of stable ice is essential — it allows us to minimize movement and capture long exposures between half a second and two seconds. Each second of stillness counts when the aurora begins to dance above us.
When the Northern Lights grow stronger, our focus shifts. We expose for the highlights, carefully preserving the delicate shapes of the light without overexposing them. In these moments, precision becomes everything — it’s a balance between the power of nature and the patience of observation.

It’s hard to believe how warm Greenland can feel in July. The days are often calm and bright, and the air feels softer than you’d expect this far north. On a trek from Karale to Tasiilaq Fjord in July this summer, we hiked under the sun for a big portion of the trek, surrounded by icebergs, mountains, and silence.
