Everywhere you go in Greenland, you will find tulugaq the raven. You see it in every settlement, every fjord, every stretch of sky. It is both ordinary and extraordinary, a creature of everyday life and ancient stories. The raven is the only bird here that plays with the wind, not just flying, but dancing, gliding, and tumbling through the air as if it owns the sky.
To the Greenlandic people, tulugaq carries deep meaning. It’s a trickster, a creator, a messenger between worlds. In legends, it can bring light, transform shapes, or carry the voice of the unseen.
Commonplace, yet full of spirit, tulugaq reminds us that magic often hides in plain sight.
The raven is perhaps the most intelligent bird species in the world. Konrad Lorenz, Austrian behavioural scientist, concluded that the raven could "play", use tools and can solve problems faster than other birds he studied.

The subject of this visual review was ilimanaq_lodge, a place so special to me in more ways the one, and somewhere I’ve been back many times, the last while leading a photography tour. It’s evident how special Ilimanaq Lodge is when you see the reactions of others who are experiencing it for the first time. Despite the luxe comfort inside, it’s hard to sleep when you’ve got icebergs drifting outside, whales dancing in the sea and a midnight sun glowing all night, calling you and your camera back to the deck to continue documenting the magic!
Thank you to the team at worldofgreenland and visitgreenland who I worked with in 2019 to first photograph Ilimanaq and the surrounding hiking trails! I’m so grateful you opened my eyes to the beauty of Greenland and can’t wait to visit again soon. 🇬🇱

🌞 Sunny day and a meet and greet with one of Erfalik’s old timers up in Paradise Valley 🏔️
Char are not all created equal and their spawning colours can vary dramatically depending on a number of environmental factors but diet and age being the most prominent. 🦐
Primarily feeding out on the coast, a heavy crustacean diet loaded with astaxanthin pigments results in vibrant red flesh and outer skin 🔥
Though if they are feeding heavily on fish such as Capelin that are in abundance around Greenland, their flesh will be more white and the outer skin more peach and olive 🐟
As Char reach a good old age it is not uncommen for their pigements to dull and fade and their fins turn thick and rubberry from years of migrations and spawning. 💪
No doubt it is another case of natures assurance that the younger more spritely fish can be seen and be able to take their place as the more dominant mate in the best territories. 🔴
